AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. PRES. TRUMP: WE MUST MAKE SURE
THAT THOSE JUDGED TO POSE A
GRAVE RISK OF PUBLIC SAFETY DO
NOT HAVE ACCESS TO FIREARMS. THAT IS WHY I HAVE CALLED FOR
RED FLAG LAWS.>>THAT’S SOMETHING WE HAVE TO
CONSIDER. WE’RE LOOKING AT THAT AND
LOOKING AT WHAT OTHER STATES
HAVE DONE IN THIS AREA. PATRICK: THAT WAS THE PRESIDENT
AND WISCONSIN GOVERNOR TODAY
TALKING ABOUT RED FLAG LAWS,
AFTER MASS SHOOTINGS IN TEXAS
AND OHIO LEFT 31 PEOPLE DEAD
OVER THE WEEKEND. 17 STATES HAVE SUCH LAWS ON THE
BOOKS, WHICH ALLOWS AUTHORITIES
IN SOME CASES TO TAKE GUNS AWAY
FROM SOMEONE WHO IS A THREAT TO
THEMSELVES OR OTHERS. SO, WHO WOULD IT TARGET, AND HOW
WOULD IT WORK? 12 NEWS’ TERRY SATER HAS THE
STORY.>>IF IT’S JUST A REMOVAL OF THE
WEAPONS, I DO NOT THINK WE ARE
SOLVING THE PROBLEM. I THINK WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THE
PROBLEM, WHICH IS PROBABLY A
MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS. REPORTER: WEST MILWAUKEE POLICE
CHIEF DENNIS NASCI SAYS HE’S IN
FAVOR OF CREATING A RED FLAG LAW
TO GIVE WISCONSIN LAW ENFORCERS
MORE TOOLS TO GET GUNS OUT OF
THE HANDS OF SOMEONE POSING A THREAT. BUT HE SAYS PROVIDING MENTAL
HEALTH TREATMENT IS JUST AS
IMPORTANT.>>A LOT OF TIMES WE HAVE THIS
DISCUSSION AND WE’RE JUST
TALKING ABOUT THE GUNS. IT’S REALLY NOT ABOUT THE GUNS. IT’S ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL IN
CRISIS. AND WE’RE TRYING TO PROTECT THEM
AS WELL AS EVERYBODY ELSE.>>BANG. BANG. REPORTER: THAT HAPPENED IN
MILWAUKEE LAST FALL ON ELECTION
DAY. BRANDON BAKER PLEADED GUILTY TO
GUN CHARGES AFTER POSTING A
VIDEO AND TALKING ABOUT STARTING
A REVOLUTION. THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED THE
KIND OF THREAT THAT WOULD FOLLOW
— FALL UNDER A RED FLAG LAW
THAT ATTORNEY GENERAL JOSH KAUL
HAS BEEN LOBBYING FOR IN
WISCONSIN.>>THIS WOULD ALLOW FOR AN ORDER
FROM A JUDGE THAT WOULD ALLOW
POLICE OR A FAMILY MEMBER TO
COME FORWARD TO GET THAT ORDER. AND HAVE THE PERSON TEMPORARILY
DISARMED. SO THAT THE THREAT CAN BE
ADDRESSED. AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN SAVE LIVES. REPORTER: BUT THE PRESIDENT OF
GUN RIGHTS GROUP WISCONSIN CARRY
DISAGREES.>>THIS IS JUST ABOUT A GUN
GRAB. NONE OF THESE RED FLAG LAWS TALK
ABOUT SHOULD WE TAKE AWAY THE
PERSON’S CAR, THEIR KNIVES,
THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER WEAPONS
PEOPLE CAN USE. THIS IS SOLELY FOCUSED ON GUNS
BECAUSE THIS IS A POLITICAL
ISSUE FOR PEOPLE LIKE JOSH KAUL. SO IF I UNDERSTAND CORRECTLY
POLICE WOULDN’T SIMPLY BE ABLE
TO DECIDE ON THEIR OWN TO
PERMANENTLY TAKE AWAY SOMEONE’S
GUNS?>>THAT’S RIGHT. WHETHER IT’S POLICE OR A
CONCERNED FAMILY MEMBER THE GUN
ISSUE WOULD HAVE TO BE ARGUED
BEFORE A JUDGE THAT A PERSON WAS
A DANGER TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS
BECAUSE OF A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS OR THEY’VE MADE A THREAT. THEN IT WOULD BE UP TO A JUDGE
WHETHER
