So today we have a specialty court training
conference, that provides training for probation officers, our case managers, court staff our
treatment providers, prosecutors, and attorneys to be able to learn more about the specialty
court and our best practices. This particular one is going to emphasize
trauma. If they are pending a court case then they
would have to see their court coordinator and ask them, I’m interested, or to their
attorney to ask them that they are interested in going. So if they are veterans we have a veterans
treatment court, if they have a DWI or having trouble controlling their drinking, then we
have a DWI court. We have drug courts, we have mental health
courts, and we have the Esperanza court, which is a court that deals with individuals that
have prior prostitution charges. I wanted to keep that up since I left the
bench so then I established the foundation and all the money that we raise, we put it
back into the community to help these people get off of drugs. The ten key components of drug court, one
is testing, court reviews, and a very important one is training. Because these drug court professionals that
include defense attorneys and prosecutors, the treatment provider, the caseworker, they
all have to understand the model and they have to have a passion and they have to have
empathy for these people. its one of the most productive work that I’ve
ever done and I’m glad that I still got my finger in it and were doing it, and we are
doing this training.
