IN A BIG GROUP HUG, AND MAKE SURE THEY ALL KNOW WE’RE HERE FOR THEM. REPORTER: IN ASPEN, MATT KROSCHEL, COVERING COLORADO FIRST. COLORADO SENATOR CORY GARDNER WANTS TO HELP VETERANS IN OUR STATE AND BEYOND. HE JUST LAUNCHED THE VA READINESS INITIATIVE. IT’S SIX BILLS MEANT TO SUPPORT OUR SERVICE MEMBERS, WELCOME HELP FOR OUR MILITARY MEN AND WOMEN. SHAUN BOYD IS HERE NOW, AND THIS IS REALLY GOING TO HELP A LOT OF VETERANS. COLORADO HAS AMONG THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF VETERANS IN THE COUNTRY. WE ALSO HAVE A HIGH ORE SUICIDE RATE AMONG OUR VETERANS. THE CHALLENGES FACING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY ARE VAST, AND SENATOR CORY GARDNER’S LEGISLATION IS A SWEEPING EFFORT TO ADDRESS THEM. THEY DON’T CARE THAT WE’RE VETERANS, THEY DON’T CARE THAT WE SERVED, THEY DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS. REPORTER: AT THE AMERICAN LEGION IN DENVER, VETERANS SHARED WAR STORIES, NOT OF ENEMY BATTLE, BUT BATTLES HERE AT HOME WITH HOMELESSNESS, UNEMPLOYMENT, SUICIDE. IF WE MAKE OUR VETERANS WHO SERVE COME HOME AND FEEL WORTHLESS, THEN WE’RE NOT DOING ANY OF THEM ANY JUSTICE. REPORTER: VETERAN TERRI CLINTON SAYS THE COUNTRY HAS FAILED TO KEEP ITS PROMISES TO VETERANS. SENATOR CORY GARDNER IS LAUNCHING A MAJOR INITIATIVE AIMED AT CHANGING THAT. THESE ARE THE MAJOR PIECES OF LEGISLATION WE BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE WE’RE READY EVERY INCH OF THE WAY TO SERVE OUR VETERANS AFTER THEY SERVE US. REPORTER: THE BILLS INCLUDE REDUCING WAIT TIMES FOR MEDICAL CARE BY ELIMINATING LIMITS ON WHO CAN ACCESS PRIVATE DOCTORS, AND EXPEDITING THE HIRING PROCESS AS VA HOSPITALS. BILLS TO EXPAND THE BOOTS TO BUSINESS PROGRAM, HELP FAMILIES OF HOMELESS VETERANS, INCREASE MEDICAL OVERSIGHT AND ACCOUNTABILITY, AND IMPROVE HEALTH CARE OUTCOMES USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. WHETHER IT’S A CHEST X-RAY OR RESULTS OF AGENT ORANGE, WHETHER IT’S, YOU KNOW, OTHER TOXINS THEY WERE EXPOSED TO, WE CAN LEARN HOW TO TREAT THEM BETTER. THE BILL ALSO ADDRESSES LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY INVOLVING DELAYS IN GI BENEFITS BY REQUIRING THE VA TO MAKE RETROACTIVE PAYMENTS RIGHT AWAY AND AUDIT THE PROGRAM IN THE FUTURE. THE SENATOR IS HOLDING ROUND TABLES WITH VETERANS ACROSS THE STATE LIKE THE ONE AT THE AMERICAN LEGION TO GET THEIR INPUT ON THE LEGISLATION, SO THE SCOPE COULD EVEN EXPAND
