CRIMINAL CASE AND AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION. (HE) GOVERNOR GINA RAIMONDO SIGNED A BILL INTO LAW TODAY — EXTENDING THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR VICTIMS OF CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE. (SN) THE BILL GIVES VICTIMS THIRTY FIVE YEARS TO FILE A LAWSUIT– RATHER THAN SEVEN. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER ALEXANDRA LESLIE WAS AT TODAY’S CEREMONIAL SIGNING– AND IS IN OUR NEWSROOM WITH WHY — SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS SAY– THIS BILL WAS NEEDED. (AL) ONE OF THOSE SURVIVORS WAS DR. ANN HAGAN WEBB. SHE’S THE SISTER OF ONE OF THE BILL’S CO-SPONSORS. HAGAN WEBB SAYS SHE WAS ABUSED BY A PRIEST AS A CHILD… AND BELIEVES THE CHILDREN OF RHODE ISLAND ARE SAFER TODAY BECAUSE OF THIS BILL. “It’s a monumental change.” ALONGSIDE HOUSE AND SENATE BILL SPONSORS AND CHILD SEX ABUSE SURVIVORS… GOVERNOR GINA RAIMONDO SIGNED A BILL TO HELP VICTIMS OF CHILDHOOD SEX ABUSE. IT EXTENDS THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR THOSE CLAIMS FROM 7 YEARS TO 35 YEARS AFTER THE VICTIM TURNS 18. THIS MEANS VICTIMS WILL HAVE UNTIL THEY ARE 53 YEARS OLD TO SUE THEIR ABUSER OR THE INSTITUTION THAT ENABLED THEIR ABUSE. “and it also gives victims up to seven years to to file a lawsuit after discovering or remembering that an abuse had taken place.” THE BILL WENT THROUGH LOTS OF REWRITES… “To the victims and survivors: you were heard, and that’s what matters,” REPRESENATATIVE CAROL HAGAN MCENTEE CALL IT ‘ANNIE’S BILL.’ “It rescues future children from being abused because shining the light of day on this is what makes the difference. The children of Rhode Island are safer today because of this bill. I really do believe that.” SENATOR DONNA NESSELBUSH SAYS THE BILL IS A VICTORY FOR THE STATE… BUT THERE IS STILL MORE WORK TO BE DONE. “… if you can possibly get the evidence to prove your case, well, darn it, the courthouse doors ought to be open. And I won’t rest until we can achieve that. But today is a moment of victory. Thank you all.” (cheers) (AL) I ALSO SPOKE WITH JIM SCANLAN, A LOCAL SURVIVOR OF CLERGY SEX ABUSE WHO WAS FEATURED IN THE MOVIE “SPOTLIGHT.” HIS REACTION IS FEATURED IN THIS STORY ON WPRI.COM LIVE IN THE NEWSROOM, I’M ALEXANDRA LESLIE, EYEWITNESS
