Result of civil service pay ballot

Hi I’m Mark Serwotka the general
secretary of PCS. Earlier today we issued the result of our pay ballot. Now that
pay ballot once again has demonstrated that thousands of you have voted to say
you are not prepared to accept the government’s unfair treatment on pay.
Nearly 80% of you have voted for strike action and over 90% of you have voted
for action short of a strike. Yet unfortunately we have fallen a fraction
short of the government’s undemocratic requirement that more than 50% of
members vote in a postal ballot. Now those laws were made in this place
behind me – Parliament – by a minority Conservative government and they were
designed to make it as hard as possible for people to take industrial action. And
yet when you look at this ballot the government should take no heart in the
fact that we’ve fallen a fraction short, because you voted in massive numbers to
take industrial action. In reality we are only a few thousand votes short of
reaching their undemocratic threshold. So this week I will be meeting government. I
will be urging them to listen to your voice and do something about pay in 2019, and your National Executive Committee will be meeting over the next two days
to take decisions as to how we move forward and I will issue a further
update to all members towards the end of the week. Can I thank you for your
support in this campaign, and can I ensure you that we will continue to do
all we can for decent pay and decent conditions.
