THE TRAGEDY IS BRINGING RENEWED ATTENTION TO ELEVATOR SAFETY AND RAISING MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHO GETS TO MAKE ELEVATOR REPAIRS. LISA ROZNER REPORTS. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE NO GOVERNMENT REGULATED TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR MECHANICS TO WORK ON STATES ELEVATORS. A BILL SPONSORED BY A SENATOR WOULD CHANGE THAT. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHO IS WORKING ON THEM. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT LEVEL OF TRAINING THEY’VE HAD AND NO IDEA HOW SAFE THOSE OPERATIONS ARE. Reporter: YOU CAN’T CUT HERE WITHOUT A LICENSE. IT IS ABSURD, YOU CAN FIX ELEVATORS. AND WORK ON OTHER PEOPLE MOVERS WITHOUT HAVING A LICENSE. Reporter: THE SENATOR SAYS THE LEGISLATION HAS BEEN IN THE WORKS FOR NEARLY A DECADE. AND ALREADY 36 STATES PLUS THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA REQUIRED MECHANICS TO BE LICENSED. NEW YORK HAS MORE ELEVATORS THAN LOS ANGELES AND CHICAGO COMBINED. AND THE CITY SAYS THERE ARE MORE THAN 70,000 PASSENGER ELEVATORS ACCOUNTING FOR BILLIONS OF TRIPS PER YEAR. THE BILL PASSED THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN JUNE AND ELEVATOR MECHANIC OF 30 YEARS HELPED CRAFTED. THERE ARE HORRIFIC INCIDENTS AND LARGELY AT THE HANDS OF MAINTENANCE CONTRACTORS WHO DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM.     Elevator repair should definitely be DIY….Why is the Governor acting like this is a real complex issue, one that needs much thought and debate?? For Christ
    Sake, if you change a god damn light bulb in NYC, you need to hire a master electrician &
    obtain 3 permits from the city, and follow all state and federal protocols for the proper disposal of the broken lightbulb.

    She is right. You can't cut hair without a license, but no license is needed for elevator repair technicians? That is absurd. Legal review should not be required, to have people get licensed.
