LAWMAKER – DEFEATED IN HIS DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY TWO WEEKS AGO… ISN’T GIVING UP WITHOUT A FIGHT. WOONSOCKET REPRESENTATIVE JON BRIEN ANNOUNCED HE FILED A HATCH ACT COMPLAINT AGAINST WOONSOCKET FIREFIGHTER STEPHEN CASEY. BRIEN CLAIMS BECAUSE CASEY WORKS FOR A FIRE DEPARTMENT THAT TAKES FEDERAL FUNDS, HE IS COVERED UNDER THE HATCH ACT…. AND CANNOT RUN IN A PARTISAN ELECTION. BRIEN IS ASKING THE OFFICE OF SPECIAL COUNSEL FOR A QUICK RULING IN THE MATTER, TO PREVENT A SPECIAL ELECTION DOWN THE ROAD. [“We are asking the special office of federal ruling in this matter so that the taxpayers in Woonsocket are not required to bear the costs of an expensive special election at a time when neither they nor our financially distressed city can least afford it.”] (MM) EYEWITNESS NEWS SPOKE TO STEPHEN CASEY TODAY… WHO TELLS US HE IS CONSULTING WITH EXPERTS ON THE TOPIC. AND THAT AS A PRIVATE AT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, HE SAYS HE HAS NO SAY OVER FEDERAL MONEY OR POLICY. WE ALSO SPOKE TO SPEAKER FOX’S OFFICE WHO SAYS THEY’RE CONFIDENT THERE IS NO VIOLATION.
