(“Thomas County Law” by Iron & Wine) ♫ Thomas County law’s got a crooked tooth ♫ Every traffic light is
red when it tells the truth ♫ The church bell isn’t
kidding when it cries for you ♫ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down ♫ Thomas County Road
takes you where it will ♫ Someone’s singing on the
far side of other hills ♫ There’s nowhere safe to
bury all the time I’ve killed ♫ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down ♫ There’s a couple ways to
cross Thomas County line ♫ You can’t see beyond the trees ♫ They’re too tall and wide ♫ And I never seem to see
around my brother’s wife ♫ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down ♫ There are castles for kings ♫ There are birds without wings ♫ I could whine about it all but I won’t ♫ Thomas County law’s got a crooked tooth ♫ There ain’t a mother with a
heart less than black and blue ♫ When they hold them to the
light you can see right through ♫ Every dreamer falls asleep
in their dancing shoes ♫ I may say I don’t belong
here but I know I do ♫ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down ♫ Nobody looks away when the sun goes down

I am currently deployed and I thank this man from the bottom of myself for this amazing music. I have been listening for over ten years and have never been dissapointed, only humbled and satisfied.

“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”

For years sub pop has been a beacon for all. Personally, as one who's submitted to a subdued life I'm grateful to pull sub pop vid releases.

This is like Iron & Wine with an infusion of the National. Beautiful storytelling with a disjointed polyrhythm/time sign. Some comments say that this has no 'hook' or feel, but music should not always be easy to listen to. This is an intriguing mixture of both though.

Ok, I'm digging this more than "Call it Dreaming". My favorite album of his, is the amazing and Psychedlic "Shepard's Dog", but I really love all of his albums. To me he hasn''t released anything poor yet. "Call it Dreaming" was probably my least favorite single of his ever though.

My favorite I&W song so far.

  • Franz Farmer Post author

The Truest Stars We Know is my favorite from the album so far.

  • Franz Farmer Post author

This is odd. I've been in the small camp that has really liked/loved everything Sam Beam has done so far. When people complained about "Kiss Each Other Clean" all I could think was how fun and catchy "Me and Lazarus" was or how "Glad Man Singing" and :Godless Brother" were instantly among my favorite Iron & Wine songs ever. Same thing happened with "Ghost on Ghost". I thought the "Desert Babbler" was a fantastic and impressive change in style and mood from anything he had done before. Last years album with Jesca Hoop was filled with interesting, well written and memorable tunes. As far as I was concerned, Sam just wouldn't release an album that I would just find to be just ok, until now. "Beast Epic" to me is a strange experience. With critics saying he has gone back to his roots, I'm truly baffled. Sam's songs on his first 3 albums were largely built around repetive, trance inducing finger picking patterns in a very specific style and atmosphere. For example "Faded from Winter", "An Angry Blade", "Dearest Forsaken", "Free Until The Cut Me Down", "Pagan Angel" and many, many others. This album, literally has NONE of that style. Do these critics think just because this album is largely acoustic and mellow that equals the same thing? This is as different to "Creek" as "Ghost on Ghost" was, except that album still have a couple throwbacks to the earlier style with different instrumental arrangements. I'm not at all saying that this fact makes this album bad of course, just that the idea that this is a throwback couldn't be more wrong. This is also the first alum not to even get intense emotionally or noisy. Every album and some of the EP's have had songs like "Lovers Revolution", "Your Fake Name is Good Enough", "Cinder and Smoke" ect. Basically what I'm trying to say is this easy listening Iron and Wine. Never has Sam come across so pleasant but unengaging. Sam has valiantly been fighting the classification of soft indie folk singer since his psychedelic masterpiece "Shepherds Dog" (my favorite) but here he succumbs to the stereotype. I think I can say "Last Night" and "Right for Sky" are among my least favorite songs in his catalog. Thankfully those are followed by my favorite song on the album, "Truest Starts we Know". When I listen to this song, I remember what Iron & Wine music really feels like. The ending tag, although way to short is fantastic. The introduction "Claim Your Ghost" is also one of the better songs and although it sets up the plaintive vibe, its a better version of it. "Bitter Truth" is a nice song, but is like a lot of the rest of the album. Nice but not really engaging.

This song is so eloquent and humble. I wish I knew what it meant but I think Sam just wants us to figure it out in a personal sense.

  • EmeraldCreeper Post author

All of his songs have meanings, don't know them all, but if I could sit down with any song artist and talk, it would be Sam. I mean, there are a lot of good song artists out there, but Sam, would have lessons to teach and stories to tell, and all with true meaning.
