– In today’s video we’re talking
about some practical tips that you can use to find your case on the internet if it’s available. So if you’ve been charged with a crime, many people wanna look up their case and see what is going on with it. Unfortunately the process can
be a little bit confusing. There are a lotta different courts. There are different systems,
different jurisdictions, so the purpose of this video
is to give you some guidance on how it all works so you
can look into your case and find out more about what’s going on. So first and foremost,
we need to understand the difference between the case types and the different jurisdictions. You have different counties in Arizona. So you have Pima County,
which covers Tucson. You have Yuma County, which covers Yuma. You have Maricopa County,
which covers most of Phoenix and all of the big cities
are included in that county. And so, depending on where your case is, you may wanna look to
specific county sites. You also wanna know the
difference between felony cases and misdemeanor cases and civil cases. There are certain cases that can be found on certain websites that only
cover that type of crime. So for example, in Maricopa County, we have different felony
cases that can be found in the Superior Court, where
felony cases are heard. We have misdemeanor cases that are heard in misdemeanor courts. So on this white board I
have different types of areas where you can look, different websites, different courts, different jurisdictions, and we’re gonna run through them so you understand what covers what. So at the beginning we have
what’s called public access. So if you google Arizona public access or you follow the link
on our YouTube video or on our webpage, you will see that we’re gonna link
to a big broad website that covers almost everything. It covers almost all the different courts. It covers almost all of the misdemeanor and the felony courts. They’ll show up in some form or another. It probably won’t be the best
area to find more information about the details of your case, but you can start here and
then work your way down, narrow it down, so this is
kinda the shotgun approach. When you search up your
case in public access, you’re gonna get the most results. It’s gonna cast the widest net of all the different locations. So you can start here if you want. It covers almost all the
courts, except it does not cover most Maricopa County justice courts. So if you look on your citation, if you look on your criminal charges, if you got a DUI, and it
says you have to report to a justice court, there’s
a different website for that. You’re not gonna really find much of that unless your case has gone into default or unless something different happened, you’re not gonna find
that on public access. So that may be why you’re not seeing it. The 26 Maricopa County courts, those are covered in a different website. You’re also not gonna see certain city courts on public access. Cities have different court systems and most of them are not reporting over to the public access website. The city of Scottsdale will. The city of Glendale will. But you’re still gonna wanna look to those different websites
because there’s more information in their individual city systems. Anything that is a Supreme
Court or appeals court case is not gonna be there. And you’re also not gonna
find any federal cases. This is an Arizona public access. It’s not gonna cover any federal cases that are gonna be filed in
the Federal District Court. That’s a separate video. The Maricopa County justice courts, as I said at the beginning, these are gonna cover
any of the justice courts in Arizona or in Maricopa
County, specifically. So if it’s outside of Maricopa County, like if it’s the Page Justice Court or the Flagstaff Justice Court or the Pima County
Consolidated Justice Courts, those are not gonna be
covered in this website. On this website, also, we have a link so you can just go right
to the search page. We try to keep these updated so you’re not having to poke around all the different Google websites, but if you’re looking for
your criminal court case in Maricopa County Justice Courts, you’re gonna find one of 26
different justice courts. There’s 26 of them included. They will cover all of Maricopa County and in this court, they
will only be misdemeanors. This court will only
hear misdemeanor cases or civil traffic cases
and other types of cases, but we do criminal defense law. And so you’re gonna
find your criminal case that is a misdemeanor in this court. If it is a felony, you
don’t even have to bother with looking at this part of the website, or on this part of the internet. It’s not gonna be there. It’s gonna be in a superior court. Which leads us to the next point here. Superior courts only cover felonies. They will cover felonies, and sometimes they’ll have some lesser
included misdemeanor chargers, but if you’re charged with a felony, it’s gonna be in a superior court. It’s not gonna be in a city court. It’s not gonna be in a justice court. It’s gonna be in a superior court. So you may see some of those
records in public access, but you’ll want to look more specifically, and we have the link included
here for your information, you’re gonna wanna go to
the superior court website because you’ll see specific court dates. You’ll see what the future
scheduled court dates. You’ll see who the assigned prosecutor is, who your public defender is
if you’re looking for that, who the judge is, all of that information and different links to minute entries and just a whole slew of more information. Follow the link if you’ve
been charged with a felony and you’re trying to
find your criminal case. And then finally we have the city courts. So as I said, most cities in Arizona, particularly in Maricopa County, cities like Gilbert,
Mesa, Chandler, Tempe, Glendale, the city of Scottsdale, they all run on different court systems. For whatever reason, they think that they have the best system. They process their cases their own way. They have their own programs. So you’re gonna wanna navigate
to that specific court and use their system to pull
up information about your case. Some are better than others. Some, their search function is garbage. Some are very, very good. It just depends on the different court. But for your ease and
for your convenience, we’re gonna have all of them
listed here on this video so you can just find the one
where you think your case is and look it up. If you think that you’re confused, you’re probably gonna wanna
start here in public access. That’s gonna be the widest
net that you can cast to try to find your criminal
case on the internet. If you can’t find it there, then you’re gonna wanna
sort of narrow it down. Am I being charged with a felony? If it’s a felony, look
in the superior courts. If it’s a misdemeanor,
you’re gonna wanna look in the justice courts
and in the city courts and see if you can find it. If you need help with this,
give our office a call. We offer free case evaluations. We’ll help you find your case. If it’s an active case,
we’ll be able to tell you a little bit more about
what’s going on with it. If it’s an old case, if you’re
looking to file a motion to set aside your conviction
or something along those lines, we can help find that. If it’s on the internet,
we’ll find it for you. Some courts are not on the internet. There are courts like
Paradise Valley, for example, that doesn’t report
anything on the internet. So you will not find it there. You’ll need to actually call the court or hire us to look into it for you. But this is how it works by and large. I hope this helps you find your case and help to provide you with some clarity on how to use these systems
so you can check on your case and see how it is progressing. As I said, if you need help
with it, give us a call. Free case evaluations. We’re happy to help look your case up and tell you exactly what you need to do. We look forward to speaking with you soon. Thanks for watching. (gentle upbeat music)
