[Music] the strongest point that I’ve taken from
the social justice class is the word identity and understanding what identity
means how many different identities there are and how many different
identities can be at work at one time and how they determine a person’s
experience in life I feel like my views have changed from taking the course but
more so I’ve been made aware of some of my internal biases and getting to
address some of those this class is very interactive they actually do a lot of
work on their own they come to class once a week and what I try to do in
those classes is put what they’ve learned to work my favorite that we’ve
done this semester and that we’re kind of still in progress doing is we
interviewed ourselves with an extensive list of questions at the beginning of
the semester then at the end of the semester were reviewing those answers
and going through it again to say like you know how our answers changed over
time we have kids in our class from all over campus I think what it affirms the
most is that one those of us that feel a certain way about a certain topic are
not alone but also that there are other perspectives out there and that
educating each other on the perspectives we hold is probably the best way to try
to cover some ground as we’re having those conversations we’re also talking
about race class gender orientation religion ability for Social Work
students who are in that class I feel it’s imperative for them to take away an
understanding of the impact that social difference and social exclusion has on
different populations of people and to understand how to manage their own
behavior in not perpetrating that further with anybody the impact that
this class has had on my desire to become a social worker is really rooted
and again the direct application from classroom to feel being able to take
discussions that we have in this class take them to my service-learning and
take them to take them to the basketball team and take them to athletics I’m a
Social Work major and by nature these these topics are
very near and dear to me they’re also very near and dear to people who are not
Social Work majors a core takeaway that I’ve gotten from this course has been
about where I am and how that’s shaping my evolution in Social Work learning and
how I can use this information to be a better social worker
