ROYALE: MARK MEDLEY GOT FIRED,
COULDN’T GET A JOB, AND WASN’T
ALLOWED TO VOTE.>>IT’S SHOCKING. ROYALE: IT’S ALL BECAUSE HIS
IDENTITY WAS STOLEN.>>IT REAKS HAVOC ON EVERYTHIN
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH
THIS PHASE OF SHOCK AND THEN
ANGER AND THEN YOU HAVE TO PICK
THE PIECES UP. ROYALE: YEARS LATER, MEDLEY
FORMED A NON-PROFIT COMPANY
DEDICATED TO HELP PEOPLE RECOVER
FROM LOSING THEIR IDENTITY.>>MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THEIR
IDENTITY HAS BEEN STOLEN UNT
LONG AFTER IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS. ROYALE: EXPERTS SAY THOUSANDS OF
PEOPLE IN NEW MEXICO WHO HAVE NO
CLUE THEIR IDENTITIES WERE
STOLEN. MOST OF THE TIME IT HAPPENS WHEN
THIEVES PUT SKIMMERS ONTO CREDIT
CARD READERS OR GAS PUMP
AND THOSE SKIMMERS COPY YOUR
CREDIT CARD INFORMATION.>>THE CRIMINALS, WHAT THEY’LL
DO WILL GET THAT INFORMATION AND
THEY WILL SIT ON IT FOR A YEAR
OR TWO YEARS AND THEN THEY WILL
START HITTING THAT CARD. ROYALE: CLINT GRAY IS THE VICE
PRESIDENT OF FRAUD AND SECURITY
FOR FIRST FINANCIAL CREDIT
UNION. HE SAYS RECENTLY SOME OF HIS
CUSTOMERS HAD INFORMATION STOLEN
IN 2016 AND JUST NOW ARE SEEING
THE DAMAGE. THE LEGISLATURE PASSED THE DATA
BREACH NOTIFICATION ACT A YEAR
AGO. IT MEANS BUSINESSES IN NEW
MEXICO MUST NOTIFY YOU THROUGH
EMAIL, MAIL, OR THE MEDIA THAT
YOUR INFORMATION WAS STOLEN. THAT WAY, YOU CAN CANCEL YOUR
CREDIT CARDS AND WATCH YOUR
CREDIT. BUT.>>I DON’T BELIEVE EVERYONE’S
FOLLOWING IT. ROYALE: THE NEW MEXICO ATTORNEY
GENERAL’S OFFICE SAYS THE LAW

A.G. THE POWER TO INVESTIGATE
THOSE VIOLATING THE LAW, THAT
AND COMPANIES ARE CONVINCING YOU
TO WAIVE YOUR RIGHTS TO BE
NOTIFIED WHENEVER THEY GET HACKED. IT’S IN THE FINE PRINT WHEN YOU
SIGN A USER AGREEMENT TO BUY
THINGS LIKE A CELL PHONE. THERE ARE STEPS THAT YOU CAN
TAKE TO PROTECT YOURSELF. BUT IF YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT IT,
YOU ARE COMPLETELY UNARMED. ROYALE: PAUL STULL IS THE CEO OF
THE CREDIT UNION ASSOCIATION OF
NEW MEXICO. THE 42 CREDIT UNIONS HE
REPRESENTS EAT MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS A YEAR IN LOSSES EACH
YEAR FROM IDENTITY THIEVES. HIS ASSOCIATION PLANS TO GO BACK
TO THE LEGISLATURE
>>THE PROBLEM WITH THE LAW IS
IT DOESN’T GO FAR ENOUGH. IT’S BETTER THAN NO LAW, BUT
IT’S NOT PERFECT. ROYALE: THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT’S
HITTING NEW MEXICO HARD. IN THE PAST YEAR, 30 COMPANIES
HAVE REPORTED DATA BREACHES
AFFECTING MORE THAN 900,000 NEW
MEXICANS. MOST OF THOSE CASES INVOLVE
EQUIFA
THIS MEANS MORE THAN 43% OF OUR
STATE’S POPULATION WAS AT RI
