The Auckland City Council has
allocated close to $1 million to the Maori Statutory Board. This decision was discussed
by the Maori board today. Maiki Sherman was there
for that meeting so we will cross live to her now. The Maori Statutory Board said today that all discussions surrounding the
allocation will remain confidential. However, their lawyers are urging
them to accept the $1 million which is for eight
months ending in June. What will that
$1 million be used for? It will be used for
all kinds of things, from the board salaries,
their staff and projects. However, this still falls short
of the board’s original request. The Maori Statutory Board took the
funding issue to the High Court. How is that working out? That will be heard in the
High Court on the 2nd of May. The board is seeking
clarification from the courts as to whether the
council had the right to reduce their original
funding allocation. Over half the fund was
cut for the this year and $1.5 million was cut last year. Maiki Sherman, thank you
for that report.
