WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO THE “LATE
SHOW.” I’M YOUR HOST STEPHEN COLBERT. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
( PIANO RIFF ) YOU CAN FEEL IT. I’M GLAD YOU GUYS HAVE GOT THE
ENERGY BECAUSE YOU CAN FEEL IT TON STREET TODAY. TOOTH TODAY IS A VERY ROUGH DAY,
SO LET’S START OFF WITH SOMETHING FROM THE SMILE FILE. THANKS TO TRUMP’S TRADE WAR
WITH CHINA, THE DOW JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE LOST MORE
THAN 750 POINTS TODAY. AND THAT WAS THE SMILE FILE. ( LAUGHTER )
BECAUSE IT’S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE. ( LAUGHTER )
I’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS SHOW ON HBO– “CHERNOBYL”– DON’T TELL
ME HOW IT ENDS. ( LAUGHTER )
AND IN THE THING ABOUT THE NUCLEAR REACTOR BLOWING UP, OVER
AND OVER AGAIN IN IT, A SCIENTIST OR ENGINEER WILL TELL
A POLITICIAN, “HEY, WE’VE GOT A REAL PROBLEM HERE. THE NUCLEAR CORE IS GOING TO
MELTDOWN AND KILL EVERYONE.Ӗ BUT THE POLITICIANS REFUSE TO
BELIEVE IT BECAUSE ANY ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF FAILURE
THREATENS THEIR POSITION OF POWER,
AND THEIR POWER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAVING LIVES. WHAT’S THAT GOT TO DO WITH
ANYTHING? WELL —
( LAUGHTER ) — I THINK AT THIS POINT IT’S
CLEAR THAT AMERICA’S GUN CULTURE IS MELTING DOWN, BUT
THE REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS WOULD RATHER MAINTAIN THEIR
POWER THAN SAVE LIVES. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
THE LATEST EVIDENCE IS THE TWO MASS SHOOTINGS IN LESS THAN 24
HOURS: ONE IN EL PASO, TEXAS, THE OTHER IN DAYTON, OHIO
MAKING FOUR MASS SHOOTINGS IN AMERICA LAST WEEK ALONE. 255 IN 2019 SO FAR. NOW, THERE ARE TWO BI-PARTISAN
BACKGROUND CHECK BILLS THAT HAVE PASSED THE HOUSE BUT ARE BEING
BLOCKED BY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER AND THIS MONTH’S
CENTERFOLD OF CORRUPTIONçó MONTHLY —
( LAUGHTER ) ( APPLAUSE )
— MITCH McCONNELL. ( BOOING )
THAT IS HIS MATING CALL. ( LAUGHTER )
MCONNELL’S HAD THE BILLS SINCE FEBRUARY, BUT WON’T TAKE ANY
ACTION. I’M SURE HE HAS HIS REASONS. LIKE THE $1.26 MILLION IN N.R.A. CONTRIBUTIONS. HE HAS RECEIVED. ( BOOING )
YOU CAN’T PUT A PRICE ON HUMAN LIFE, BUT IT DOESN’T STOP MITCH
FROM TRYING. ( LAUGHTER )
AFTER EVERY ONE OF THESE TRAGEDIES — EVERY TIME THIS
HAPPENS, EVERYBODY WANTS SENSIBLE GUN LEGISLATION AND
NOTHING HAPPENS. MAYBE IT’S TIME FOR “SENSELESS”
GUN LEGISLATION. ( LAUGHTER )
MAYBE TURN IN YOUR ASSAULT WEAPON AND IN EXCHANGE WE’LL
GIVE YOU A GIANT PORK SAUSAGE.>>OKAY? ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
THAT MAKES NO SENSE. THAT IS SENSELESS. ( APPLAUSE )
GIVE ME YOUR GUN, YOU GET A GIANT PORK SAUSAGE. IT’S EVEN MORE FALK THAN YOUR
GUN AND IT’S ONLY GOING TO HURT YOU. ( LAUGHTER )
( APPLAUSE ) ( PIANO RIFF )
THIS TIME IT’S NOT JUST GUNS, IT’S ALSO OVERT RACISM. WHEN A REPORTER ASKED
EL PASO-NATIVE BETO O’ROURKE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING THE PRESIDENT
COULD DO ABOUT THE SHOOTINGS, HE DID NOT HESITATE TO NAME THE
RADIOACTIVE CORE OF THIS MELTDOWN.>>IS THERE ANYTHING IN
YOUR MIND THAT THE PRESIDENT CAN DO NOW TO MAKE THIS ANY BETTER?>>WHAT DO YOU THINK? UMM, YOU KNOW THE (BLEEP) HE’S
BEEN SAYING. HE’S BEEN CALLING MEXICAN
IMMIGRANTS RAPISTS AND CRIMINALS. I DONK)
THE PRESS, WHAT THE (BLEEP)? HOLD ON A SECOND.ñ
YOU KNOW, IT’S THESE– IT’S THESE QUESTIONS THAT YOU KNOW
THE ANSWERS TO. I MEAN, CONNECT THE DOTS
ABOUT WHAT HE’S BEEN DOING IN THIS COUNTRY. HE’S NOT TOLERATING RACISM, HE’S
PROMOTING RACISM. HE’S NOT TOLERATING VIOLENCE,
HE’S INCITING RACISM AND VIOLENCE IN THIS COUNTRY. SO, YOU KNOW, I DON’T KNOW WHAT
KIND OF QUESTION THAT IS.>>STEPHEN: WELL SAID. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
WELL SAID. REFRESHING CANDOR. REFRESHING CANDOR. IT’S ALL WELL AND GOOD TO OFFER
THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS, BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED SHOUTS AND
SWEARS. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
TODAY, TRUMP PUT ON HIS PRESIDENT PANTS AND ADDRESSED
THE TRAGEDIES IN EL PASO AND DAYTON– OR TRIED TO:
>>MAY GOD BLESS THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO PERISHED IN TOLEDO.>>Stephen: OKAY. ALL RIGHT. WRONG CITY, BUT DON’T WORRY,
SIR. IT’S NOT LIKE OHIO’S THAT
IMPORTANT IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. ( LAUGHTER )
JOE BIDEN BETTER HOPE IT’S NOT, BECAUSE LAST NIGHT, HE OFFERED
SYMPATHY FOR THE “TRAGIC EVENTS IN HOUSTON AND ALSO IN
MICHIGAN.” ( AUDIENCE REACTS )
HOLY TOLEDO. ( LAUGHTER )
LATER ON IN HIS ADDRESS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE, TRUMP TOOK A STRONG
STAND:ñr>>IN ONE VOICE, OUR NATION MUST
CONDEMN RACISM, BIGOTRY, AND WHITE SUPREMACY.>>STEPHEN: I TRY MY BEST EVERY
NIGHT, BUT YOU’RE STILL IN OFFICE. ( LAUGHTER )
( PIANO RIFF ) ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
SO — ( CHEERING )
SO WHO’S TO BLAME FOR THESE SHOOTINGS? TRUMP HAD A, LET’S SAY, THOUGHT:
>>WE MUST STOP THE GLORIFICATION OF VIOLENCE IN OUR
SOCIETY. THIS INCLUDES THE GRUESOMEE
AND GRISLY VIDEO GAMES THAT ARE NOW COMMONPLACE.>>STEPHEN: FIRST OF ALL,
THERE’S NO LINK BETWEEN VIDEO GAMES AND SHOOTINGS. EVERY COUNTRY HAS VIDEO GAMES. BUT THESE TRAGEDIES ONLY HAPPEN
HERE. SECONDLY, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR
TRUMP TRY TO NAME A SINGLE VIDEO GAME. ( LAUGHTER )
(AS TRUMP) “THESE VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES:
‘TETRIS-MUNCH,’ ‘GHOST MARIO,’ ‘GRAND THEFT PONG.'”
( LAUGHTER ) THEN, IN HIS OWN WAY, TRUMP
TRIED TO HEAL A NATION.>>NOW IS THE TIME TO SET
DESTRUCTIVE PARTISANSHIP ASIDE, SO DESTRUCTIVE, AND FIND THE
COURAGE TO ANSWER HATRED WITH UNITY, DEVOTION, AND LOVE.>>STEPHEN: (AS TRUMP)
“YES, WE MUST SET ASIDE PARTISAN BICKERING OVER WHO FIRED UP THE
WHITE NATIONALISTS IN OUR COUNTRY, AND COME TOGETHER AS
ONE: (SINGING TO “KUMBAYA”)
♪ SEND HER BACK, MY LORD SEND HER BACK
♪ SOMEONE’S DIFFERENT, LORD SEND HER BACK
♪ I’M NOT RACIST LORD —
( APPLAUSE ) NOT EVERYONE WAS HEEDING TRUMP’S
CALL TO UNITY. LIKE CORY BOOKER, WHO HEARD
TRUMP’S SPEECH AND TEXTED THIS TO HIS CAMPAIGN MANAGER, WHO
THEN TWEETED IT: “LISTENING TO THE PRESIDENT. SUCH A BULL (BLEEP) SOUP OF
INEFFECTIVE WORDS.” ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
OKAY,ENING I SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE. OKAY. I SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE. SO BETO SWEARS, NOW EVERYONE
JUMPS ON THE CURSE WAGON. THE NEXT DEBATE IS GOING TO BE
FUN. (AS BOOKER)
“Y’KNOW, MR. VICE PRESIDENT, THEY HAVE A SAYING IN MY
COMMUNITY: YOU’RE DIPPING YOUR SPOON IN THE BULL (BLEEP) SOUP
AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW THE TASTE OF ASS CROUTONS!”
( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ) ( PIANO RIFF )
>>Jon: IS THAT A SAYING? I HAVEN’T HEARD THAT ONE.>>Stephen: TRUMP DEFENDED
GUNS ON CAMERA, BUT ON TWITTER, HE WAS MORE OPEN
TO COMPROMISE: “REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS MUST
COME TOGETHER AND GET STRONG BACKGROUND CHECKS, PERHAPS
MARRYING DOT, DOT, DOT, DOT DOT, DOT, DOT, DOT THIS
LEGISLATION WITH DESPERATELY NEEDED IMMIGRATION REFORM. WE MUST HAVE SOMETHING GOOD, IF
NOT GREAT, COME OUT OF THESE TWO TRAGIC EVENTS!”
(AS TRUMP) “AND IF I KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT
MARRYING, IT IS ALWAYS A TRAGIC EVENT.” ( LAUGHTER )
( APPLAUSE ) BUT LISTEN TO WHAT HE’S DOING —
( APPLAUSE ) — LISTEN TO WHAT HE’S TRYING TO
DO HERE, GUN CONTROL AND IMMIGRATION
REFORM HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER, AND THEY’RE THE TWO
HARDEST THINGS TO DO IN WASHINGTON, SO NATURALLY HE
WANTS TO COMBINE THEM. (AS TRUMP)
“CONGRESS HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO EAT FIRE OR LEVITATE. ( LAUGHTER )
SO, THEY SHOULD TRY TO DO THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. ( LAUGHTER )
MIGHT MAKE IT EASIER TO LEVITATE WITH FLAMES SHOOTING OUT THEIR
BUTTS.” ( LAUGHTER )
TRUMP WAS ABLE TO FIND AT LEAST ONE PERSON TO DEFEND HIM, ACTING
CHIEF OF STAFF MICK MULVANEY, SEEN HERE EXPLAINING HOW TALL A
PILE OF LIES HE’S ABOUT TO SPEW. ( LAUGHTER )
MULVANEY WENT ON THE SUNDAY SHOWS AND HE POINTED OUT THAT
GUN VIOLENCE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GUNS.>>WE’VE HAD GUNS IN THIS
COUNTRY FOR– FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. WE HAVEN’T HAD THIS UNTIL
RECENTLY AND WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHY.>>STEPHEN: OH, I KNOW WHY. IT’S BECAUSE THOSE GUNS WE HAD
HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO WERE SLOWER AND LESS POWERFUL. IT’S WHY, DURING THE
REVOLUTIONARY WAR, THE BRITISH SOLDIERS VOLUNTEERED TO WEAR
BRIGHT RED COATS AND STAND IN A STRAIGHT LINE! (AS COLONIAL BRITISH SOLDIER)
“WOULD YOU MIND KILLING US MORE QUICKLY? IT’S NEARLY TEA TIME AND WE HAVE
TO DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN IN THE CRIMEA.” ( LAUGHTER )
>>Jon: WOW!>>Stephen: THE CRIMEA! ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
MULVANEY’S MAIN ARGUMENT: EVERYONE IS TO BLAME EXCEPT HIS
BOSS.>>THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THERE’S NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. BUT THEY ARE SICK, SICK PEOPLE. AND THE PRESIDENT KNOWS THAT. AGAIN, JON, I DON’T THINK IT’S
FAIR TO TRY AND LAY THIS AT THE FEET OF THE PRESIDENT.>>STEPHEN: IT’S TRUE. YOU CAN’T LAY THIS AT THE FEET
OF THE PRESIDENT, ‘CAUSE THAT’S WHERE MICK MULVANEY SLEEPS. ( LAUGHTER )
( PIANO RIFF ) WE’VE GOT A GREAT SHOW FOR YOU
TONIGHT. STAR OF HBO’S “SUCCESSION” BRIAN
COX IS HERE, BUT WHEN WE RETURN, ANOTHER TRUMP APPOINTMENT BITESt
THE DUST. STICK AROUND. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )

When did guns become more then people's lives.

Why has no shooter ever been taken down by a legal US gun owner, if 30% of Americans own and carry guns "to protect their people"? Seems legal gun owners run like rabbits, too.

Guns are everywhere. Everywhere in the world, if someone wants one, it will be possible to get one. In Europe there are plenty more politicians like Trump, even more dangerous with their rhetoric, but it is not because one of them says that immigration has to stop that some deranged idiot goes on the street and starts shooting at them… People of the USA… your are totally nuts and should be locked up… Mr President, you have be showing great leadership in this respect … keep on building walls and fences all around the country, they do work in 2 directions, because it will avoid Americans to come out as well! And of course, keep on chanting” Lock THEM ALL up” and “send THEM ALL back” when anybody manages to escape… MAGA: Make Americans Go Away!
And when you’re done, stop swearing at the constitution by pretending that the 2nd amendment is about the right to own guns… it shows how illiterate Americans are. Really, never seen such a shame. Because it clearly says that anyone has the right to defend himself. That’s the purpose of that amendment, take it in his context, it is not a manifest to promote senseless killings, what NRA and others of the kind made of it.

Not to nitpick, I used to live in Canada in the 90's where I picked up my ESL English 🙂 although, I enjoy watching Colbert using VPN from Tehran-Iran; but for crying out loud, I also know a thing or two about history!. Crimean War was 80 years after American Revolutionary War…..Still Colbert is quite on top of his game when it comes to late night shows….

  • Michael nunya Post author

You Americunts are beyond stupid. You are a nation that was born out of violence, that has lived and perpetrated violence through real wars and all media. Graphic images are easily and readily available. Every outdoor sporting event is heavily under military influence.

You blame the second amendment and assault rifles.

You have a problem with violence in your nation but it’s not because you have assault rifles.

That being said, you’ll need assault rifles for your upcoming civil war.

  • Kim Novak Post author

As a country that has gun control- before people start screaming don’t take my guns away I need them for protection. My Country HAS guns but it also has gun control. People are allowed guns here. Registered shooters either shooting as a sport or hunting – they are allowed guns .If you are a member of a rifle club / shooting club you can get a licence for a gun . What gun control is is the total ban of automatic and semi automatic weapons. Why do you need a semi automatic or automatic weapon to shoot an animal with – hardly using your skills as a hunter if you are.
With a shot gun there are limited shots you can make before you have to reload ( time to get away if you can) but with a semi auto or automatic gun you have no chance of getting away . The problem is it is too late USA there are too many of these guns owned by individuals who feel the need to protect themselves for other individuals with these weapons. Yes sometimes these mass shooters have mental health issues but some are just sociopaths . To blame video games and mental health for these shootings is a lie.
Take the New Zealand shooting that bloke planned the whole thing . He knew he couldn’t get the guns he wanted in Australia ( because of gun control ) so he made multiple trips to NZ and got the guns there ( at the time no gun control -you could buy automatic weapons there) That type of planning is not done by someone with mental health issues this was a cruel and calculated attack by a coward .
Do the people of the US not realise that all these senators and even the POTUS are all public servants. You elected them and they are working for you . You are their employer – the general public of the USA

  • cratedog64 Post author

If Colbert only had a brain. If he only had a clue. There is no possible way to keep guns away from lunatics; I wish there was a way, but there just isn't. When mayors across the land grow a set and commit to destroying every single gang in the U.S. and confiscate THEIR guns, then maybe we can sit down and discuss stricter gun laws. But liberals' gun law ideas are 'take all guns away from everyone and depend on police to protect us'. Stop and look at an 'assault rifle', per say; it is a SEMI-AUTOMATIC, just like most every pistol out there. Today its the assault rifle, tomorrow its pistols, then vehicles, then knives, then chemicals, and so on. Problem is, there is no possible way to control or even outlaw firearms; there are just too many of them…

  • Martine Post author

The Civil War would have been more appropriate. Americans shooting Americans is not new. However, it's worth mentioning, the gun death rate per capita during the Civil War is still lower than our current rate. You had less of a chance of dying by gun when America had two armies fighting each other than you do today. Food for thought.

Getting rid of guns wont stop anything….just slow it down. Timothy McVeigh wasn't able to get a gun so he used a fertilizer bomb. There are mass stabbings in other places that have strict laws, like the UK. They also wont tell you that there was an attempted mass shooting that was stopped by an armed civilian at a Walmart in MD.

I am a proud a proud American LIBERAL. Yes. Liberal. I am also a gun owner and enthusiast. My favorite pistol is my Browning Hi Power 9 mm that I had for over 30 years. I enjoy it. I used to own an SKS semi auto rifle. 20 years ago, I turned it in. I do not need a weapon like this. It is useless for self defense. It is useless for hunting. It is more likely to maim an animal than anything. These weapons were made for killing our fellow man. Period. I don't miss that damn rifle one bit. Video games? The NRA, Trump, and Walmart are morons. God bless our country. Impeach Trump. Ban military style large magazine weapons. And don't blame people with mentaql illness for thee killings. Blame so called "disenfranchised" white nationalists. Fucking American Nazis. And Trump embraces these fucks. Why? They are his "base." Sick. My uncle was crippled by a NAZI bullet fighting Fascism in WW2. Do not dare compare fucking American NAZI evil to AntiFa. Being ANTI Fascist is being pro American values. Dig?

if the problem was video games why do we only have republican white men shooting up malls/stores/abortion clinics/mailing bombs to trump's opponents/ taking pizza restaurants hostage to free Hillary Clinton's child trafficking victims from a non-existent basement/ actually being billionaire child traffickers?

Evidence gun control laws can prevent mass shootings: Brenton Tarrant (Christchurch shooter) was Australian and radicalised in Australia. The only reason he launched his attack in NZ is because it's almost impossible to get semi-automatics in Australia after our own Port Arthur massacre induced the conservative government to piss off their base and enact extremely restrictive gun laws and a huge gun buyback. Meanwhile, semi automatics were relatively easy to obtain in NZ. Restrictive gun laws in the US will not be enough on their own however. In order for semiautomatics to be difficult for people with ill intent to find, you'd have to make them essentially outlawed in every state and remove the majority from circulation via a gun buyback of unprecedented scale. It'd be one of the most politically challenging things the US would ever have done as so many associate gun ownership with freedom. You'd need a Pearl Harbor level tragedy to convince a majority of citizens in the more pro-gun states that it's worth the sacrifice to surrender their semi automatics. If there wasn't that will after Sandyhook, I can't see it happening ever.

I pointed this out before.the number of people who own guns are declining.Hunting in my state was such a huge thing when I was younger. All the boys went hunting on weekends then told stories on Monday at school. You literally weren't cool if you didn't own a gun or went hunting.Fast forward years later and greed got in there and F'd it up.The landowners started charging big money to hunt on their land for a single day. When paid hunting took the fun out of hunting then numbers dropped. So the moral of the story is, take away the fun of hunting with greed, take away the numbers of people who support the second amendment.

Hey Colbert, since you seem to enjoy your First Amendment freedoms, you need to submit your declared experience & training in the Arts in Comedy, failure to do so ,can remove you from exposure within all forms of media.
The topics of sarcasm will no longer be allowed, because it is too effective & powerful.

I wonder if jews measured the impact of their video game industry by stating that video games were the cause of mass shootings. If you ask me, this kind of lunatic liberal content is the damage control to it.

As someone who does not live in the USA, the justification I hear most often for the totally screwy gun laws, (aside from a 2nd Amendment which does not, in fact, sanction the bearing of arms, except as required by a WELL REGULATED militia), is that people need to be able to protect their homes and families.

If we accept that concept, then there ought to be quite a number of instances where intruders are shot by people protecting their homes and families, in circumstances which the Courts would consider justifiable. But how many of these incidents actually occur.

In fact, and with no preconceived view, my research indicates that self defense with a gun happens in under 1% of crimes against people or personal property, where the victim defended themselves, Self defense is the reason that about half of American gun owners say they bought a gun, they seem to be deceived into a constant state of fear, which, when you think about it, is no way to live!.

The NRA would have you believe that some 2 Million people use a gun in self defense each year, Now, let us assume that in 50% of those cases, the gun is presented, but not fired. That leaves 1 Million shots fired. Let's say 50% of those shots miss, 500,000 people shot. Let's say 30% are fatal, so 150,000 people killed and 350,000 injured. Big numbers!

So where are they? One would assume that at least 175,000 of these people would need hospital treatment, but in fact, ''only 70,000'' people were injured by firearms, from all causes, in the USA in 2017!
''Only'' 35,000 people were killed by firearms during that time in the USA. This presumably means that we have a large number of unidentified victims who died and did not come to Police attention and an even bigger number whose gunshot wounds were not treated and remain injured and suffering the dreadful wounds a gun can inflict, without seeking medical aid.

Obviously, the NRA figures don't bear close scrutiny.

Now, as I said, I don't live there, so if Americans want to shoot each other or get all macho with guns, it only bothers me on a humanitarian level. But plainly Americans are highly unlikely to ever use their gun to defend themselves in a lifetime, but people who should not have guns have the opportunity to offend with a gun every day of their life!

It makes no sense to me that 100,000 Americans have their lives destroyed or severely damaged each year, in the name of an amendment to their Constitution which addresses a need which simply does not exist!

Until we solve the mental problems going on today getting rid of guns won't do much. People will just turn to other acts like driving a semi into a crowd of people. I grew up in mid 80s and people had guns on the wall all the time. It would have been nothing for kids to just grab the guns off the wall get some ammo which was also not locked up and start blasting. Why didn't all these mass shootings happen back then? It certainly isn't violent games, movies ,music. All that was going on then also. The only real difference i can see is social media. Also the baby the children view that most parents and schools have today doesn't help things, it makes them soft and more prone to rash and extreme actions.

Back when the Tommy Gun was legal there were less mass shootings. It had a 100 round capacity, by the way. More people than ever don't know how to solve their problems and instead of thinking of solutions they want to punish people that aren't even the cause of their problems. They say IQ's are going up, but I don't see any correlation between IQ and solving the world's actual problems. A thousand smart people can "solve" something and a thousand unhappy people can find a way to kill innocent people just to be heard. We are all unhappy.
